EJ Stokes 2/16/15Religion 2 Fr. Albert The Kingdom of God
The Jews and Jesus had different views of the kingdom of God, including what this kingdom was like. For example, the Jews viewed the kingdom of God as a nation state that is ruled by a military leader. Jesus said its not a place with political borders, and that it is a new way of relating to God and neighbors. The Jews also viewed God as awesome and fearsome. He is so fearsome that you can't even say his name. They also see him as distant and mysterious. He is mysterious because we can't see or hear him but we somehow can keep our faith in him. God performs miracles through Jesus which gives us a good idea of what God is like. Jesus views him as our father and a passionate loving parent ("abba," or Father). The Jews also believe they should show concern for others, but Jesus says love everyone, no exceptions. It's a sin to hold grudges and always wanting to get revenge on others. Our love imitates God's love for us.
